PM10 particulate matter

The analyzes carried out for the preparation of the Air Quality Plan for the Malopolska Region showed the exceedance of the permissible annual average concentration of PM10 for the year 2015 in the area of 60 km² (0.4% of the region’s area) inhabited by 350 000 people (10% of the population of the region). The areas with exceedances were recorded in 16 municipalities and overlapped with compact housing areas of the following cities: Krakow, Nowy Sącz, Tarnów, Sucha Beskidzka, Proszowice, Miechów, Bochnia, Chrzanów, Skawina, Oświecim and Nowy Targ.

In the area of approx. 1.2 thousand km2 (8% of the area of the region) inhabited by 1.7 million of people (50% of the residents of the Malopolska Region), there are more than 35 days per year on which 24-hour PM10 permissible concentrations exceed 50 μg / m³. The PM10 exceeds the daily level of PM10 within 121 municipalities of the region, the highest concentration was recorded in the areas of Krakow, Nowy Sącz, Nowy Targ, Kęty, Chrzanów.

PM2.5 particulate matter

The permissible level of annual average concentrations of suspended particulate matter PM2.5 for 2015 was exceeded in 55 municipalities, in an area of 300 km² (2% of the region). PM2.5 exceedances negatively affect 1.1 million inhabitants (32% of the Malopolska Region’s population). The highest permissible exceedances were determined in the areas of Krakow, Nowy Sącz, Nowy Targ and Chrzanów.

Benzo (a) pyrene

Annual average penzo (a) pyrene concentrations in all of the 182 municipalities in the region exceed the target level of 1 ng / m³ for 2015. The area of exceedances is 13 000 km² (85% of the region’s area) and the number of exposed inhabitants is 3.2 million (94% of the Malopolska Regions’ inhabitants). Model calculations showed the highest concentrations in the area of Krakow, Nowy Sącz, Chrzanów and Nowy Targ.

Nitrogen dioxide

The areas with elevated concentrations of average annual nitrogen dioxide in Krakow are located along the major transport routes, particularly in the city center and along the A4 motorway. The exceedance area in 2015 was 2 km² and 15 000 inhabitants of Krakow were exposed to high levels of nitrogen dioxide.
